This is an incomplete (and growing) list of video games that have been censored.

Australian censorship[]

The R18+ classification was introduced into video games in 2013.

  • 50 Cent: Bulletproof - Originally banned due to high impact violence. A censored version of the game was later classified MA15+.
  • Biltz: The League - Banned because of drug use related to incentives and rewards.
  • BMX XXX - Originally banned due to high amounts of nudity. A censored version of the game was later classified MA15+.
  • CrimeCraft - Banned due to the use of drugs as a power-up.
  • Dark Sector - Banned because of gory violence.
  • Dream Web - Banned because of a scene of sexual violence. Censored version was latter released.
  • Enzai: Falsely Accused - Banned because of sexual violence.
  • Fire Emblem Fates - The ability to drink alcohol was removed. (Same as the other countries)
  • Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - Outfits made less revealing in the International release.
  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number - Banned because of a scene of sexual violence.
  • Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude - Banned because of sexuality and nudity in relation to incentives and rewards.
  • MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death - Banned due to the ability to touch the underage character Connie's breasts in-game and her reactions.
  • Mega Man - The Yellow Devil's name was changed to Rock Monster.
  • Mega Man Zero - Blood was removed from the game.
  • Mega Man Zero Collection - References to death were removed from the game.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - The word "Damn" is has been replaced by the word "No".
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door - Violence was toned down, and all alcoholic references were removed.
  • Paranautical Activity - Originally banned due to the use of Adderall in-game to increase a player's speed. A censored version of the game was later classified M.
  • Phantasmagoria - Banned due to strong sex scenes and allusions to sexual violence.
  • Pocket Gal 2 - Banned due to the use of nudity as a reward.
  • Postal - Banned due to high impact violence.
  • Postal 2 - Banned due to high impact violence.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Saints Row IV - Originally banned due to the use of narcotics to obtain powers in a side mission. A censored version of the game was later classified MA15+. Passed R18 uncut in New Zealand.
  • Sexy Poker - Originally banned due to the use of nudity as a reward. A censored version of the game (the version that was eventually released worldwide) was later classified M.
  • Singles: Flirt Up Your Life - Banned due to the use of sexual activity as a reward.
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth - Originally banned due to the depiction of sexual violence against minors. A censored version of the game was later classified R18+. Passed R16 uncut in New Zealand.
  • Spin the Bottle: Adults Only Interactive DVD Game - Banned due to high impact sexual references.
  • Seven Knights - Character outfits were made less revealing.
  • Syndicate - Banned due to high impact violence. Passed R18 uncut in New Zealand.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • The Bug Butcher - Banned because of drug use related to incentives and rewards. A censored version was latter released.
  • The Punisher - Originally banned due to high amounts of violence. A censored version of the game was later classified MA15+.
  • Voyeur - Banned due to high amounts of sexual references.
  • The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings - Two scenes that had nudity were cut for the Australian release.

Brazilian censorship[]

  • EverQuest - It was banned due to Australia's X18+ references.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City - It was banned due to it using music by the Brazilian composer Hamilton da Silva Lourenço without proper permissions.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.

Canadian censorship[]

Despite using the ESRB rating system like in the United States, some games released in Canada were censored unlike in the USA:

  • Fire Emblem Fates - The ability to drink alcohol was removed.
  • Lineage 2: Revolution - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Mega Man - The Yellow Devil's name was changed to Rock Monster.
  • Mega Man Anniversary Collection - The word Damn was changed to Darn.
  • Mega Man Legends - A erotic magazine was removed from the game, the ability to kick non aggressive animals was removed from the game, violence was toned down.
  • Mega Man Zero - Blood was removed from the game.
  • Mega Man Zero Collection - References to death were removed from the game.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - The word "Damn" is has been replaced by the word "No".
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door - Violence and sexuality were toned down, and all alcoholic references were removed.
  • Seven Knights - Character outfits were made less revealing, the petting mini game was removed, outfits were modified to be less revealing, and some scenes were cut.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X - Some outfits were changed to be less revealing and the breast slider on the make your character screen was removed.

Chinese censorship[]

  • Battlefield 4 - It was banned due to discrediting of China's national image as well as a threat to national security.
  • Command & Conquer: Generals - It was banned due to smearing the image of China and the Chinese army.
  • Final Fantasy XV - Outfits were changed to be less revealing.
  • Genshin Impact - Amber, Jean, Mona, and Rosaria had their clothing altered, cleavage outline removed for Amber, top half of the torso covered for Jean, leotard with shorts for Mona, and reduced breast size, shorts and tights with no fishnets for Rosaria, their backless outfits (even though Amber shows a tiny amount of back skin) are never censored.
  • Football Manager - It was banned due to recognizing Taiwan and Tibet as independent countries. A edited version was latter released worldwide
  • Hearts of Iron - Banned due portraying Tibet, Sinkiang, and Manchuria as independent countries and Taiwan as under Japanese control.
  • I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike - Banned because of intentionally smearing China's and the Chinese army's image.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.

German censorship[]

  • Baldur's Gate - Blood and gore effects were removed from the game.
  • Baldur's Gate 2 - Blood and gore effects were removed from the game.
  • Bionic Commando - Any mention of the Nazi's were removed from the game.
  • Call of Duty Black Ops - Nazi symbols were removed from the game, Blood was toned down, Zombies dont turn into crawlers.
  • Call of Duty: World at War - Nazi symbols were removed from the game, blood and gore was toned down and the Nazi zombie mode was removed from the game.
  • Bulletstorm - Blood and guts was cut from the German release.
  • Carmageddon - The ability to run over humans was changed to the ability to run over robots.
  • Castlevania Bloodlines - Blood was removed from the game, death and violence was toned down.
  • Command and Conquer Generals - The game was banned in Germany, a censored version was latter released all real world factions were renamed and the terrorist units were changed, and dead civilians and any human was changed to robots. One of the missions was cut from the game.
  • Contra - All enemies that were humans were turned into robots.
  • Dead Rising - Nudity was censored, two images that had nudity the women wear bikini's for the German release.
  • Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - Outfits made less revealing in the International release.
  • Half-Life - Violence was toned down, Human grunts replaced with robot grunts and friendly NPCs do not collapse upon death.
  • Mega Man - The Yellow Devil's name was changed to Rock Monster. (Same as Canada)
  • Mega Man Legends - A erotic magazine was removed from the game, the ability to kick non aggressive animals was removed from the game, violence was toned down.
  • Mega Man Zero - Blood was removed from the game.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - The word "Damn" is has been replaced by the word "No".
  • Mortal Kombat - Violence was toned down.
  • Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks - Blood was digitally removed, and gore was blurred.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Red Ninja: End of Honor - Blood and gore were removed.
  • Soldier of Fortune II - All of your enemies are changed to robots, as a result all of the blood and gore is removed from the German release.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Team Fortress 2 - All of the human players were changed to robots, as a result there is no blood.
  • Turok - All of the demon enemies were changed to robots, every human who was a enemy was changed to robots.

Irish censorship[]

  • Castlevania Bloodlines - Blood was removed from the game, death and violence was toned down.
  • Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - Outfits made less revealing in the International release.
  • Fire Emblem Fates - The ability to drink alcohol was removed. (Same as the other countries)
  • Manhunt 2 - Originally banned due to "gross, unrelenting, and gratuitous violence." The ban was later lifted, and the game was released with a PEGI 18 rating.
  • Mega Man - The Yellow Devil's name was changed to Rock Monster.
  • Mega Man Legends - A erotic magazine was removed from the game, the ability to kick non aggressive animals was removed from the game, violence was toned down.
  • Mega Man Zero - Blood was removed from the game.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - The word "Damn" is has been replaced by the word "No".
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.

Japanese censorship[]

Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) regulates the console gaming industry in the country. Their ratings are A, B, C, D, and Z as of 2006. It is illegal to sell or show a CERO Z game to a person under 18.

  • Berserk And The Band Of The Hawk - Violence is toned down for the Japanese release.
  • Bulletstorm - It was censored due to excessive violence, blood and gore was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops - It was censored due to excessive violence, blood and gore was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Crash Bandicoot - Violence was toned down.
  • Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back - Violence was toned down.
  • Dead Island - It was censored due to excessive violence, blood and gore was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Doom 64 - The blood is colored green for the Japanese release.
  • Fallout 3 - The side-quest "The Power of the Atom" was censored for the Japanese release due to it showing a nuclear weapon being used on a city. and the weapon called Fat-Man was removed from the game.
  • Gears of War 3 - It was censored due to excessive violence, blood and gore was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! - It has been accused due to a disturbing relationship between Akito and Toya. Episode 6 of Petit SEKAI was banned due to promoting blackface when Leo/need dresses up as lions in tribal outfits (a pun on the band's name). An censored version is available, removing the tanned skin and changing the outfits.
  • Higurashi : When They Cry - The remake censors some explicit sexual references (including Satoko's nudity, Keiichi's skimpy maid outfit, Une's and Mikoto's revealing punishment outfits (only available in Kizuna)) tones down some gory references such as Watanagashi-hen (especially cannibalism), including recoloring blood blue/dark colors. Console versions often cut dialogue, especially when discussing about World War II.
  • I=MGCM - The non-DX versions remove any nsfw scenes.
  • Jak II - Violence was toned down.
  • Mafia 2 - Nudity was covered up with black bars.
  • Mafia 3 - Nudity was covered up with black stars, and sexuality was toned down.
  • Mega Man Legends - A erotic magazine was removed from the psp version of the game.
  • Mega Man Zero Collection - References to death were removed from the game.
  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - It was censored due to excessive violence, blood and gore was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Mortal Kombat - Violence was toned down.
  • Mortal Kombat II - Violence was toned down.
  • Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 - Blood was digitally removed.
  • Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 - Blood was digitally removed.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • No More Heroes - Blood splatters are removed, Decapitation scenes are censored, they are now implied but not shown. Scenes that have missing body parts are censored, they are now implied but not shown.
  • No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle - The violence is toned down.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Resident Evil 4 - It was censored due to excessive violence, blood and gore was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Resistance: Fall of Man - Blood is removed from the game.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Violence and gore was reduced, and nudity was removed from the Japanese release.
  • Until Dawn - A death scene was censored in the Japanese release.
  • Wolfenstein 2 - Nudity was toned down and some blood was digitally removed.

New Zealand censorship[]

  • Fire Emblem Fates - The ability to drink alcohol was removed, which is the same reason as Canada.
  • Gal*Gun: Double Peace - It was banned due to it tends promoting and supporting both the exploitation of children and young persons, and the use of coercion to compel a person to submit to sexual conduct.
  • Manhunt - It was banned because of graphic violence and depictions of cruelty.
  • Manhunt 2 - It was banned because of graphic violence and depictions of cruelty.
  • Megaman - The Yellow Devil's name was changed to Rock Monster.
  • Mega Man Zero - Blood was removed from the game.
  • Mega Man Zero Collection - References to death were removed from the game.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - The word "Damn" is has been replaced by the word "No".
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Postal 2 - It was banned because of graphic violence and offending cruelty.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Reservoir Dogs - It was banned because it promoted and supported extreme violence and extreme cruelty for the purpose of entertainment.
  • Seven Knights - Character outfits were made less revealing.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Three Sister's Story - It was banned because it promoted and supported the use of violence to compel a person to submit to sexual conduct and the exploitation of young persons for sexual purposes.

Pakistani censorship[]

  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter - It was banned for portraying Pakistanis negatively.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.

South Korean censorship[]

  • Homefront - It was banned due to it having a negative view on North Korea.
  • Mortal Kombat (2011) - It was banned because of excessive violence and cruelty.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.

UK censorship[]

  • Bionic Commando - Any mention of the Nazi's were removed from the game.
  • Carmageddon - The ability to run over humans was changed to the ability to run over zombies.
  • Castlevania Bloodlines - Blood was removed from the game, death and violence was toned down.
  • Contra - All enemies that were humans were turned into robots.

  • ActRaiser - Religious references were altered or removed in the US version. These changes were also carried over the European releases.
  • ActRaiser 2 - The Ice Palace boss reveals less skin in the US version. Religious references were altered. These changes were also carried over the European releases.
  • Advance Wars - The Red Star army was originally known as Orange Star army in the Japanese version, in order to avoid innuendos to communism. Cosmetic differences in the outfits of all characters were also made.
  • Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance - In the NES version, the spells "Bless" and "Prayer" were renamed to "Empower" and "Meditation".
  • Bionic Commando - Any mention of the Nazis were removed from the game.
  • Breath of Fire IV - The scene that shows Fou-Lu decapitating Emperor Soniel head was cut from the North American release.
  • BMX XXX - Nudity was removed from the USA release.
  • Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII - The Minerva statue was redesigned due to the original design looking like the Virgin Mary.
  • Earthbound - Ness appears clothed in pajamas instead of appearing naked. References to death were less obvious, a punishment is changed from spanking to loss of dessert, the phrase "Die and go to Hell" is replaced with "I'll smash your guts".
  • Final Fantasy - Any reference to death or Judeo-Christian beliefs were removed from the North American version.
  • Final Fantasy II - Religious symbols were removed from the North American version.
  • Final Fantasy IV - Some weapons were removed, religious imagery was removed, references to death and violence were removed from the North American version.
  • Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - Outfits made less revealing in the International release.
  • Final Fantasy VII - The word "Fuck" was changed to "Prick", the Honey Bee Inn brothel was made less important. The PC version censored the word "Shit" and changed it to "Wench".
  • Final Fantasy Legend - The word "God" was changed to "Creator".
  • Final Fantasy Legend II - In the Japanese version opium was mentioned in the story, opium was changed to "Bananas".
  • Final Fantasy Legend III - The word "Holy" was changed to "White", any weapon that has the word holy in its title is renamed.
  • Fire Emblem Fates - The ability to drink alcohol was removed, the petting mini game was removed, outfits were modified to be less revealing, and some scenes were cut. (The first reason as same as the other countries above)
  • House Party - Nudity was censored and some sexual situations were censored.
  • Infinite Minigolf - A poster that displayed suggestive themes was digitally removed due to the game targeting a E rating.
  • Lineage 2: Revolution - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Mario Party 8 - The word "Spastic" was changed to "Erratic".
  • Mega Man - The Yellow Devil's name was changed to Rock Monster.
  • Mega Man Legends - A erotic magazine was removed from the game, the ability to kick non aggressive animals was removed from the game, violence was toned down.
  • Mega Man Zero - Blood was removed from the game.
  • Mega Man Zero Collection - References to death were removed from the game.
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - The word "Damn" is has been replaced by the word "No".
  • Mortal Kombat - The SNES version removes the blood from the game and the violence is toned down.
  • Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Two of the Fatalities are censored in the American release.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 - The blood was censored.
  • NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD - It’s original name NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE is renamed to NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD overseas because of an unsubtle drug reference, the switch version replaces drugs and sex with euphemism. The drugs are replaced with magicals, which are (in all name but) drugged sweets/confectionaries, however (technicolor) blood, death, and profanity is present.
  • Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door - Violence and sexuality were toned down, and all alcoholic references were removed.
  • Quantum Break - Nudity and drugs were removed from the game and the violence was toned down.
  • Seven Knights - Character outfits were made less revealing.
  • Soulblade - Nude woman now wears bathing suit.
  • Street Fighter V - Sexuality was toned down.
  • Super Castlevania IV - In the Japanese version the title screen has a drops of blood, the blood was removed in the international version. The crosses on gravestones and any object that had cross were modified. The nude statues in the game were modified in the international version, the international version has them wearing clothing. In the international version blood was completely removed from the game.
  • The Witcher - The cards showing Geralt's "sexual conquests" were modified in the US release, the characters outfits were made less revealing.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X - Some outfits were changed to be less revealing and the breast slider on the make your character screen was removed.
  • Zombies Ate My Neighbors - Blood was changed to purple ooze.
