Censored movies

This is a non-exhaustive list of films that have been censored or banned in some countries. This includes censorship of films broadcast on television.

Australian censorship

• Barbarella - Nudity censored in order to receive an M rating. No uncut version released.
• Brüno - Sex scenes edited for an MA 15+; uncut Blu-ray version classified R 18+.
• Cuties - The uncut version was banned and was edited in order to receive a MA 15+ rating.
• Grown Ups 2 - Some crude humor was censored in order to receive a PG rating. Uncut M rated version released on Netflix Australia.
• Hellraiser - Was initially classified R 18+; distributor chose to censor/cut three minutes of graphic violence for theatrical release in order to receive an M rating. Released on home video uncut with the R 18+ rating.
• The Hero - Initially refused classification, but cut more than necessary from a censored R 18+ version to receive an M rating in theaters.
• Hot Shots! - A single use of "f***" was removed for both theatrical and VHS releases in order to receive a PG rating. Released on DVD uncut with an M rating.
• Kung Fu Hustle - Some strong violence was cut for theatrical release to receive an M rating; classified MA 15+ uncut on home video.
• Lethal Weapon 4 - Some strong violence was cut to receive an M rating for theatrical and rental VHS releases. Released uncut on DVD and Blu-Ray with an MA 15+.
• Lionheart - Uncensored in theaters with an R 18+; released on home video with graphic violence censored in order to receive an M rating.
• Mad Max II - Some graphic violence was cut on theatrical release to receive an M rating rather than an R 18+.
• Men in Black - Some moderate violence was cut to receive a PG rating for the theatrical release. Released uncut on home video with an M rating; this same uncut version is typically shown on Australian television with a PG rating.
• Quantum of Solace - Sexuality was toned down for the DVD release.
• Total Recall - Initially released with graphic violence cut on home video to receive an M rating. A special edition release was passed uncut with an MA 15+.
• World War Z - The theatrical cut toned down the violence, digitally removed blood and cut some scenes in order to reduce the runtime.

• Goodfellas - Some violence was removed.

9GO!

• RoboCop (1987) - Some strong violence was removed.

Channel 10

• Mean Girls - Some sexuality was removed.

Channel 11

• The Simpsons Movie - Nudity, drug usage and some violence was removed.

Canadian censorship

• Bumfights - The films are banned in seven out of thirteen provinces (including Quebec). Cut for an R-rating.
• Exit to Eden - The movie was temporarily banned in Saskatchewan due to its led of classification authority disband.
• A Clockwork Orange - Banned in Alberta and Nova Scotia.
• Romeo and Juliet (1968) - Banned in Ontario.
• Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - Censors in Nova Scotia bans the film due to "obscene and blasphemous" description. Received its "Restricted" rating by decision reverse.
• Women in Love - Banned by Alberta censors due to nudity.

Chinese censorship

• Babel - Nudity was removed from the movie.
• Casino Royale - The movie was censored for the Chinese release.
• Deadpool - The movie was banned due to nudity, graphic violence and strong language.
• Ghostbusters (2016) - The movie was banned due to its supernatural elements.
• Infernal Affairs - The movie was made more family friendly.
• Iron Man 2 - The words "Russia" and "Russian" were muted for the Chinese release.
• Logan - Violence was toned down and nudity was removed.
• New Dragon Gate Inn - ?
• Red Dawn (2012) - The movie was banned.
• Skyfall - Violence was toned down.
• Titanic - Nudity was removed from the movie.
• Top Gun 3D - The movie was banned due to it showing "US military dominance".
• World War Z - The movie was banned due to the movie having zombies and due to one of the actors not being allowed to set foot in China.
• The Secret Life of Pets 2 - The China map without Taiwan is blurred out in the Chinese release.
• Seven Years in Tibet - The film was banned due to depicting China negatively in China's annexation of Tibet.
• Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - banned due to having spirits swarming around and references of cannibalism.
• Christopher Robin - banned but no reasons given, but it was alleged that the movie is banned due to 2017's memes featuring Xi, or because of a large number of other Hollywood films competing for space in China's limited foreign film quota.
• Back to the Future - banned due to featuring time travel.
• Roma - scenes showing private parts explicitly was cut in the Chinese release.

Finnish censorship

• Bad Lieutenant - Heavily cut for a K-16 rating on a 1994 release.
• The Boondock Saints - Cut for a K-16 rating on a VHS release in 2000.
• Cut! - Cut for a K-16 rating on theatrical release in 1971.
• Cut and Run - Cut for a K-16 rating on VHS. Released uncut with a K-18 on DVD.
• Darkman - Cut for a K-16 rating on home video release in 1991. Released uncut with a K-15 in 2003.
• The Fall of the Roman Empire - Cut for a K-12 rating on theatrical rerelease in 1973. Modern releases are uncut with the same K-12 rating.
• Fire Down Below - Cut for a K-16 rating on a VHS release in 1997. Released uncut on DVD with a K-18 in 2001.
• Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - Cut for a K-16 rating on a VHS release in 1998. Released uncut with a K-18 rating in 2001.
• Highlander II: The Quickening - Cut for a K-16 rating on a 1991 release after initially being rated uncut with a K-18. Released uncut again with the same K-16 rating in 1998.
• The New York Ripper - Heavily cut for a K-16 rating on home video release in 1989. Released uncut with a K-18 in 2007.
• The Punisher - Heavily cut for a K-16 rating on releases in both 1990 and 1995. Released uncut with a K-18 in 2006.
• Rambo: First Blood Part II - Cut for a K-16 rating on home video release in 1989. Released uncut with a K-15/13 rating in 2001.
• World War Z - The theatrical cut toned down the violence, digitally removed blood and cut some scenes in order to reduce the runtime.

French censorship

Toonami France

• Batman vs Robin - Violence was toned down.
• Wonder Woman (2009) - Violence was toned down.
• Justice League: Gods and Monsters - Violence was toned down.
• Justice League: New Frontier - Violence was toned down.
• The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 - Violence was toned down.
• The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 - Violence was toned down.

German censorship

• Casino Royale - In order to get a FSK-12 rating violence was toned down.
• Cats & Dogs - Originally released in theaters with a 12 rating. Some violence was cut on home video in order to receive a 6 rating. No uncut release available.
• Con Air - Released cut with a 16 rating on some VHS/DVD releases. A separate uncut VHS/DVD release is available with an 18 rating.
• Crank: High Voltage - Heavily cut for a 16 rating on DVD. A separate 18-rated DVD is available, however not even this release is fully uncut.
• Daredevil - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.
• Dead Alive - Heavily cut for a 16 rating on DVD. This version was made with further cuts from the 85-minute R-rated MPAA cut, taking it down to 80 minutes.
• The Evil Dead - Heavily cut for a 16 rating. In 2016 the uncut version was unbanned and now has a FSK 16 rating.
• Gamer - Heavily cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release.
• Hulk - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.
• The Human Centipede: First Sequence - Cut by eight minutes for a FSK 18 rating.
• Iron Man - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release by four minutes, however this proved unnecessary when an uncut home video release managed to get a 12 rating.
• Jack the Giant Slayer - Scenes that showed death and graphic violence were cut.
• The Last Boy Scout - Released with heavy cuts for graphic violence on rental VHS and all DVDs for a 16 rating. An uncut version was only released on VHS with an 18 rating.
• Maleficent - Cut for a 6 rating upon theatrical release. Remained cut on DVD, however was released uncut with a 12 rating on Blu-Ray.
• Predator 2 - Cut for a 16 rating on DVD. Separate uncut 18-rated DVD and Blu-Ray available.
• Saw III - A heavily cut version (cut by 21 minutes) was rated 16. A less-cut version on home video is rated 18, while a completely uncut version was placed on the SPIO/JK index.
• Scarface - Graphic violence and language cut/removed for a 16 rating in West Germany.
• A Serbian Film - Cut by 19 minutes for an 18 rating.
• Sleepy Hollow - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.
• Snake in the Eagle's Shadow - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release and on VHS; oddly enough, when the film was rereleased in a 16-rated DVD collection, it had been cut even further.
• Spring Breakers - Cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release.
• Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie - Cut for a 16 rating on VHS.
• The Terminator - Released heavily cut with a 16 rating for VHS/DVD releases before 2010. In 2010, the uncut version of the film was reclassified with the same 16 rating.
• Virtuosity - Heavily cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release. Rerated uncut in 2013 with the same rating.
• Wedlock - Cut for a 16 rating on theatrical and home video release.
• The Woman in Black - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.
• X-Men Origins: Wolverine - A couple being doused with gasoline was cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release. The uncut version was released with the same 16 rating on home video.
• World War Z - The theatrical cut toned down the violence, digitally removed blood and cut some scenes in order to reduce the runtime.
• The Human Centipede (First Sequence) - Cut by 8 minutes for a 18 rating.
• The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) - Cut by 17 minutes for a Strafrechtlich Unbedenklich rating.

Indian censorship

• A History of Violence - In order to get released in India it was censored.
• Avengers: Age of Ultron - The words ass and shit were muted.
• Atomic Blonde - Due to the movie targeting a A rating it was censored, Alcohol lables were blurred, any scene that showed nudity was cut, the words "Cock", "Cocksucker", "Bastard", "My balls", "Prick", "Bitch" and "stoli" were muted.
• Basic Instinct - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating, strong sexual content, graphic violence and some language was cut.
• Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Nudity was censored.
• Baywatch - Due to the movie targeting a A rating, sexuality was toned down, and language was muted
• Borat - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating it was censored.
• Bridesmaids - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating it was censored.
• Clerks - Due to the movie targeting a U rating, profanity was muted.
• Cruel Intentions - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating, strong sexual content and some language was cut.
• Deadpool - Swear words were muted, sex scenes were cut, nudity was cut, violence was toned down.
• Jack Reacher Never Go Back - Swear words were muted.
• Logan - Nudity was cut.
• One Missed Call (English edition) - Due to the movie targeting a U/A cut it was censored.
• Secretary - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating, sexual content and violence was toned down.
• Specter - The Kiss scene was cut.
• Suicide Squad - The words Son of a Bitch, Ass, Pussy, Dickhead, Crotch and Asshole were muted.
• The Argumentative Indian - In order to be released in India, the words Cow, Hindu, India, Hindutva and Gujarat were muted.
• The Hangover - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating it was censored.
• The Girl with the Dragon - the CBFC wanted to cut scenes that showed rape, sex and torture.
• The Pink Mirror - It was banned due to it being vulgar and offensive.
• The Sweetest Thing - Due to the rating targeting a U rating, it was censored.
• Wonder Woman (2017) - Due to the movie targeting a U/A rating sexuality was toned down.
• X-Men: Days of Future Past - Nudity was removed from the film.

Italian censorship

• Conan the Barbarian (1982) - Cut for a T rating on a release in 1991. Uncut version classified VM14.
• Dr. No - Violence was toned down.
• Last Tango in Paris - Cut for a VM14 rating on a release in 1988. Uncut version classified VM18.
• World War Z - The theatrical cut toned down the violence, digitally removed blood and cut some scenes in order to reduce the runtime.

Japanese censorship

• Antichrist - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting some extreme gore and graphic sex.
• Blue is the Warmest Color - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting the graphic sex.
• Carrie (2013) - Released in an edited PG12 version in some theaters, presumably removing some strong violence.
• Chappie - Some graphic violence removed in order to receive a PG12 rating.
• Deadpool - Due to the movie targeting a R15+ rating, graphic nudity was blurred.
• Dogtooth - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.
• Fifty Shades of Grey - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters which cut all explicit shots of bare breasts/genitals.
• The Hangover Part II - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.
• The Kids Are All Right - Released in an edited R15+ version in theaters. Released uncensored with an R18+ on DVD.
• Lovelace - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting the graphic sex.
• Savages - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.
• Ted - Released in an edited PG12 version in some theaters, presumably removing some crude language/sexual humor.
• The Wolf of Wall Street - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting graphic sex and drug use.
• Zombie 108 - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.

New Zealand Censorship

• Atomic Blonde - On some Sky Movies airings, violence was occasionally toned down due to time constraints. It is a rather unusual case seeing as it is sometimes aired uncut on Sky Movies, and every time on Three.
• Hellbound: Hellraiser II - Cut for an R16 rating upon theatrical release. Released uncut on home video with an R18.
• The Muppet Movie - Fozzie Bear being menaced by a sailor with a broken bottle was cut to receive a G rating.
• World War Z - The theatrical cut toned down the violence, digitally removed blood and cut some scenes in order to reduce the runtime.

Pakistani censorship

• Cuties - The movie was being evaluated for its explicit imagery.

Russian censorship

• Avengers: Endgame - Dubbed version changes lines in the gay scene, and the movie isn't screened anywhere in Russia in English with subtitles.
• Beauty and the Beast (2017 film) - The movie released under 16+ rating due to gay scene.
• Power Rangers (2017 film) - The movie released under 18+ rating due to lesbian scene.
• Rocketman - All of the gay scenes were cut.

Singaporean censorship

• 8MM - Released heavily cut for a PG rating on original release. A less cut release was rated PG13. Uncut version classified R21.
• Along Came Polly - Cut for a PG rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified NC16.
• Anyone for Sex? - Cut for a PG rating on VHS release. No uncut version as of this writing.
• Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery - Cut for a PG rating on original release. Uncut version classified NC16.
• Basic Instinct - Heavily cut for a PG rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified R21.
• Black Swan - Cut for an M18 rating on original release. No uncut release as of this writing.
• Blue Gender: The Warrior - Cut for a PG rating on home video. No uncut release as of this writing.

• Scent of a Woman - Cut for a 15 rating upon theatrical and VHS release. Released uncut on DVD with an 18 rating.
• Starship Troopers - Cut for a 15 rating on home video.
• Stone Cold - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release. Released uncut on home video with an 18 rating.
• Sweet November - Cut for a 15 rating upon theatrical release. Released uncut on DVD with an 18 rating.
• We Are Your Friends - Cut for a 15 rating upon theatrical release.

Turkish censorship

• Blade Runner 2049 - Nudity was removed from the Turkish release.
• Cuties - The movie was banned.

UK censorship

• 101 Dalmatians (live-action) - Due to the movie targeting a U rating the word "bloody" was changed to "blinkin".
• Aadupuliyattam - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, strong violence and horror was removed.
• Aarambam - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, strong violence was removed.
• ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, some strong language was removed.
• Above the Law - Violence and drug use was toned down.
• Absolutely Anything - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, some strong language was removed.
• A Christmas Story (2016) - Due to the movie targeting a U rating, discriminatory language was removed.
• Agent Cody Banks - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating the scene that shows a double ear clap was cut.
• A Good Day to Die Hard - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating violence was toned down, blood was removed and some strong language was removed.
• A Hard Day's Night - Due to the movie targeting a U rating the words "Get knotted" was cut.
• Aquaman - The film was submitted for advisory cuts, the BBFC told them the film would get a 12 rating unless "bloody detail" was removed. The final cut was rated 12a due to the "bloody detail" no longer being in the movie.
• A View to a Kill - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, violence and sexuality was toned down.
• Baaghi - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, some strong violence was cut.
• Babylon 5: Messages from Earth - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, a scene of man wielding chainsticks was cut.
• Batman Returns - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, violence was toned down and reckless behavior was cut.
• Battle on the Beach - Due to the movie targeting a U rating the movie was censored.
• Bad Man's River - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating it was censored.
• Bare Behind Bars - Due to the movie targeting a 18 rating, sexuality was toned down.
• Beerfest - Due to the movie targeting a 15 rating, sexuality was toned down.
• Big - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, strong language was removed.
• Billy Madison - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, strong language and some violence was removed.
• Batman Forever - In order to get the PG rating violence was toned down.
• BumbleBee - The film cut 6 seconds wroth of footage in order to get a PG rating.
• Can't Buy Me Love - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating it was censored.
• Captain Sabertooth and the Treasure of Lama Rama - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, strong language was removed.
• Casino Royale - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating, some violence was removed.
• Dilwale - Some strong violence cut to receive a 12A rating.
• Diamonds Are Forever - Due to it targeting a PG strong language was removed, sexuality was toned down.
• Dr. No - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, violence and sexuality was toned down.
• Eraser - Due to the movie targeting a 15 rating it was censored.
• From Russia with Love - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, nudity and sexual dialogue was removed and violence was toned down.
• GoldFinger - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, violence and sexuality was toned down.
• GoldenEye - Due to the movie targeting a 12 rating, violence was toned down.
• Gone Baby Gone - This film had its UK premiere delayed due to parallels to the then-recent disappearance of Maddy McCann.
• Horns - Due to the movie targeting a 15 rating, sexual violence and strong graphic violence were removed from the film.
• Howard the Duck - A comic scene involving condoms as well as a shot of a tongue in a cigarette lighter socket were cut on theatrical and VHS release for a PG rating. A later DVD was cut more heavily for unknown reasons; finally, the film was released uncut on DVD in 2008 with a 12 rating.
• Indian and Jones The Temple of Doom - In order to get a PG rating violence was toned down.
• I'm a Porn Star - Scenes of explicit pornography cut to receive an 18 rating, rather than the R18 sex shop category.
• Jack Reacher - Due to the movie targeting a 12A rating violence was toned down.
• Jingle All The Way - A comic scene involving nunchakus was cut for a PG rating.
• John Wick 2 - Some blood was removed from a suicide scene in order to get a 15 rating.
• Justin Bieber's Believe - Two uses of strong language were completely obscured to receive a PG rating.
• Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - Post-production advice led to the removal of a headbutt and other violence during a fight scene for a 12 rating. In the completed version of the film, "glamorised" images of a flick knife were cut for a 12 rating.
• Lawman - Violence was toned down.
• Licence to Kill - Due to the movie targeting a 15 rating violence was toned down.
• Maid in Japan - Scenes in which semen is visible as well as unsimulated oral sex were cut to receive an 18 rating, rather than the R18 sex shop category.
• Manithan - Brief images of bloodied bodies were cut for a 12A rating.
• Marmaduke - A single use of the word 'spaz' was removed in order to receive a U classification as opposed to a 12A.
• Massacre in Dinosaur Valley - A scene showing a cock fight was cut in order to receive a 18 rating.
• The Maze Runner - Due to the movie targeting a 12 rating, some violence was removed.
• Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials - Due to the movie targeting a 12 rating some violence was removed.
• Milk the Maid - Explicit real sex removed in order to receive an 18 rating, rather than the R18 sex shop category.
• Monty Python and the Holy Grail - The initial theatrical release was cut for an A certificate, removing some sexual references and uses of 'Jesus Christ' as an exclamation.
• Mrs. Doubtfire - A sequence of a chain of moderate sex references was removed on theatrical and video release for years in order for the film to receive a PG rating. The film was released uncut with a 12 rating in 2012.
• My Best Friend's Wedding - A single sexual use of the word 'f***' removed in order to receive a 12 rating.
• My Dog the Champion - A single use of the word 'spastic' removed in order to receive a U rating.
• Mystery Men - Besides a compulsory ear-clap cut, the sound of a headbutt was removed on home video to receive a PG rating.
• Mulan (1998) - The scene of Shan-Yu headbutting Shang was removed to secure a U rating. Early prints of the 2000 UK DVD release was uncut, before they were pulled. The UK Blu-Ray and UK 4K UHD releases are uncut.
• Night of the Grizzly - Cut for a U rating on 1966 theatrical release. Released uncut with a PG on home video in 1987.
• Octopussy - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating nudity was censored.
• On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Sexuality was toned down in order to get a PG rating.
• Open Season 2 - A single use of 'spaz' was removed to receive a PG rating.
• Other Blokes' Wives 2 - Shots of labia removed in order to receive an 18 rating, rather than the R18 sex shop category.
• Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 - A moment of moderate violence and two sequences of weapons display (knives) were cut to obtain a PG. There is no UK uncut version released.
• Pixiwoo Presents: Hollywood Icons - Some strong sex references removed in order to receive a 12 rating.
• Prince of Darkness - A 15-rated version released on home video removes some strong violence. Re-released on DVD uncut with the same 15 rating.
• Pudsey the Dog: The Movie - A single use of 'bugger' was cut to receive a U rating.
• Sammy's Great Escape - A single use of mild bad language was cut to receive a U rating.

• The Expendables - The impact of a man being stabbed in the throat was cut for theatrical and DVD release to receive a 15 rating. Released uncut on Blu-Ray with an 18 rating.
• The Heartbreak Kid - A brief scene in which a donkey's erect penis is close to a woman was cut to receive a 15 rating on theatrical and DVD release. Released uncut on HD-DVD with an 18 rating.
• The Hunger Games - The movie was censored in order to get a 12A rating, as a result blood was digitally removed, and violence was toned down.
• The River (1984) - Cut by 10 seconds for a PG rating upon theatrical release. All home video releases are uncut with a 15 rating.
• The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - When seen in an advisory screening, the BBFC informed the distributor that sight of a nude pinup and a fight scene would earn the film a 12A. The film was re-edited to receive a PG - this edited version was released worldwide as a result.
• Thunderball - The movie was censored in order to get an A rating; sexuality was toned down.
• The Wings of Honneamise - A scene of attempted rape was removed to receive a PG. Was released uncut on home video in 2015 with a 15 rating.
• The Witches - Cut for a PG upon original release in 1990 to shorten some scenes which were considered particularly frightening to young audiences. Released uncut on home video with the same rating in 2000.

• A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - Wes Craven intended to make the movie's villain, Freddy Krueger, a child molester, rapist and child killer, but had to excise this detail to avoid accusations of exploiting a series of highly-publicized child molestation cases happening in California at the time the movie was made. Said detail however was restored in the 2010 remake.

• Arlington Road - the release date of this film was pushed back to July 9 1999 from its scheduled May 14 1999 release date, due to the events of the Columbine High School shootings, however the studio claimed that they wanted to avoid competing with Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, which was released the following weekend of Arlington Road's original release date.
• A-Team - Due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating, strong language was removed.
• Atomic Train - this NBC made-for-TV movie was preempted by Denver affiliate KUSA out of sympathy for the Columbine massacre victims, as well due to the fact that the film showed the city being destroyed.
• Avatar - Due to the movie being too long certain scenes were cut in order to reduce to movie's runtime.
• Babylon A.D - Some language was removed, any mentions of death were cut and some of the violence was cut in order to get a PG-13 rating, The DVD is unrated and adds these scenes back into the movie.
• Bad Moon - An opening intercut of sex and violence was edited to avoid an NC-17.

• Body Parts - the advertisements for this B-movie in which the protagonist, whose arm is severed in an accident, receives a limb transplant from a dead serial killer, were pulled fin Winsconsin due to the promotion and release of said film coinciding with the discovery of Jeffrey Dahmer killings. Moreover, the city of Milwaukee chose to not air the film in respect of Dahmer's victims.
• Breaking the Rules - Originally received an R rating; re-edited for a PG-13.
• Brüno - The scene involving Bruno interviewing LaToya Jackson and stealing her phone to get Michael Jackson's phone number was cut due to the death of the latter hours before the film's premiere.
• Bully - The scene involving a bully harassing a child and using multiple F-words edited to avoid an R rating.
• Caligula - Due to the movie targeting a R rating nudity was reduced and sexuality was toned down.
• Casino Royale - In order to get a PG-13 rating violence was toned down.
• Carrie (2013) - This film had its release pushed back from March 15 to October 18, just two months before its intended release date. The studio explained it was to take advantage of the lucrative Halloween market for horror films. However, director Kimberly Pierce dismisses this explanation by saying that the real reason was that in light of the Sandy Hook shooting, it would be uncomfortable to release a film about a bullied high school students who ends murdering her classmates at the prom just three months afterwards.
• Cowboys vs Aliens - Some scenes were cut due to the studio wanting to reduce the entire. These scenes were latter added back into the Extended Edition.
• Daredevil - The studio censored the film in order to make it get the more family friendly PG-13 rating. The violence was toned down in order to avoid the R rating, it latter got a R rated director's cut.
• Dawn of the Dead - Nudity was censored for the American release.
• Dead Alive - Heavily cut from 97 minutes to 85 minutes, removing extreme violence to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
• Demolition Man - the scene of the villain Simon Phoenix looking over a future cryo prison list of inmates and shouting "Jeffrey Dahmer? I love that guy!" was cut out from TV broadcasts from the movie, as Jeffrey Dahmer was bludgeoned to death in prison by another inmate in 1994, a year after the movie premiered.
• Die Another Day - Sexuality was toned down in order to get a PG-13 rating.
• Django Unchained - the premiere of this film was cancelled after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
• Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13 - Violence was toned down for the American release.
• Dragon Ball Z: Tree of Might - Violence was toned down for the American release.
• Dream House - Some graphic violence removed to receive a PG-13 rating.
• Dr. No - Violence was toned down.
• Dr. Strangelove:
  • The film had its release delayed several weeks after the John Fitzgerald Kennedy assassination in Dallas.
  • The "Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff" line said by Slim Pickens was edited to change "Dallas" to "Vegas" in order to avoid the above mentioned real-life event.
  • The original ending, which was a pie fight in the War Room where the line "Our gallant President has been struck down in his prime!" after the President is hit at one point, was edited out for the same reason.
• Elektra - Due to 20th Century Fox wanting to reduce the runtime and the movie targeting a PG-13 rating, some scenes were cut. Those scenes were cut due to it increasing the runtime and due to violence.
• Equals - Due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating, nudity was removed from the film.
• Ever After: A Cinderella Story - A PG-rated version on VHS removed a few uses of the F-word that earned the original a PG-13 for "momentary strong language". Released uncut on DVD.
• Eyes Wide Shut - Shots of explicit sex covered by digitally added figures to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
• Fantastic Four - Some dialogue was removed from the film due to the runtime.
• Fast and Furious 6 - Violence was toned down.
• Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Male frontal nudity was removed from a sex scene in order to avoid an X.
• Ferris Bueller's Day Off - A scene where Ferris, Cameron and Sloane visiting a Chicago radio station, Ferris' line "come next year, I'll be the first kid to ride on the Space Shuttle" was cut out (and the trailer, which featured it, was recalled from theaters) due to five months before the film's release, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger occurred 73 seconds after taking off, resulting in the deaths of all seven aboard.
• Fly Away Home - this film about a 13-year-old girl leading a flock of Canada geese to their nesting site by flying a handglider was delayed for several months after the death of 7-year-old Jessica Dubroff, who attempted to become the youngest person to fly across the United States.
• Footloose (1984) - Re-edited to receive a PG rating, removing an F-word and a shot of male frontal nudity.
• Freddy Got Fingered - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating it was censored.
• Freeway - Due to the movie targeting a R rating, sexuality was toned down.
• Ghost Rider - Due to Sony wanting to reduce the runtime, the movie was censored.
• Ghostbusters - Strong language was removed from the flim in order to get a PG-13 rating, these scenes are added back into the movie in the extended edition.
• Ghost Writer - Strong language was removed from the flim in order to get a PG-13 rating.
• G.I Joe: Retaliation - Due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating, violence was toned down.
• Girl Next Door - Nudity and language were cut, sexual situations were reduced in order to get a R rating. The unrated DVD adds these scenes back into the movie.
• Green Lantern - Some language and character development was cut out of the film.
• GoldenEye - Violence was toned down due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating.
• Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - this film had the following exchange: "Guess who's coming to dinner now?" (followed by the sarcastic punchline) "The Reverend Martin Luther King?" removed after King's assassination on April 4, 1968. However, in 1969, the line was restored to many prints and preserved in the home media versions of the film.
• Gummo - Scene of a young child huffing removed to receive an R rating.
• Hancock - Re-edited to receive a PG-13 rating; the unrated version released on home video shows that these edits were likely removing a comic sex scene and an additional use of the F-word.
• Ichi the Killer - A number of very violent and sexual scenes were cut for an R rating.
• Idle Hands - the film was delayed due to the Columbine massacre which happened ten days before the film's release, casting a dark shadow in the horror comedy about a high schooler whose evil hand goes on a slaughter. Columbia Pictures thought about delaying the release but still released it, albeit the premiere was cancelled and many states such as Colorado (where the shooting happened) decided to not screen the film.
• I Love You, Daddy - This film written, directed by and starring Louis C.K. whose plot was about a Hollywood producer trying to stop his teenage daughter from dating a 70-year-old film director (based on Woody Allen), originally set for limited release on November 17 2017 was pulled indefinitely by the distributor a week before C.K. confessed to several instances of sexual harassment.
• I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry - Originally rated R (and upheld on appeal), re-edited to receive a PG-13 rating. A common rumor is that one of the things the MPAA objected to was a homosexual kiss on the lips, threatening to give the film an R rating unless it was cut.
• Inside Deep Throat - The R-rated version of the film censors a scene in which explicit unsimulated oral sex is visible. Unedited version rated NC-17.
• Into the Grizzly Maze - Originally rated R for "violence, grisly images, language, and brief sexuality/nudity". Re-edited version rated PG-13 for "animal attack/disturbing images, violence, terror, brief sexuality and language".
• Jack Reacher - the premiere of this film was cancelled after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
• James Bond 007 Casino Royale - The violence was toned down due to it being considered too realistic.
• Jarhead 2: Field of Fire - Scenes with nudity and strong violence were cut in order to get a R rating, the DVD's added those scenes back into the movie in the Unrated edition.
• Jarhead 3: The Siege - Blood was digitally removed from the film, it was added back into the movie in the unrated DVD.
• Josie and the Pussycats - Some language and sexual innuendo was removed from a 'family edition' home video release for a PG rating.
• Joker - the theater where the shooting happened in the city of Aurora, Colorado, opted to not show this movie due to the film being alreadily controversial before its release, due to concerns about its portrayal of the Joker as a beaten-down loner who snaps and turns into crime and terrorism, which was felt by many as evocative of any number of then-recent mass-shootings, Aurora included.
• The King's Speech - Scene of man working through his stutter by using strong language edited in a PG-13 edition of the film. (The original scene had 18 F-words, the PG-13 edition has 1.) This cut was never released on home video.
• The Lost City of Z - Due to the movie targeting a a PG-13 rating, violence was toned down.
• Licence to Kill - Due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating the MPAA censored the movie, violence was toned down.
• Logan's Run - Some strong violence and sexual content removed to receive a PG rating.
• Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring - Due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating and due to the movie's runtime being to long it was censored, violence was toned down and some scenes were cut in order to reduce to movie's runtime.
• Lord of the Rings The Two Towers - Due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating and due to the movie's runtime being to long it was censored, violence was toned down and some scenes were cut in order to reduce to movie's runtime.

• Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - 23 minutes was cut from the film in order to make the film a fast peace children's movie.
• Mirrors - Scenes that had strong graphic violence were removed in order to receive a R rating.
• Mortdecai - Re-edited in a PG-13 edition on its video on demand release to try to draw in a new market.
• O - release delayed after the Columbine shootings, since the film featured gun violence among high school students. It was postponed from its October 1999 release date and it was not released until August 2001, with MIramax selling the distribution rights to Lionsgate.
• Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre - this film had already been pushed forward due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but subsequently, the Russian invasion of Ukraine made the film being shelved nearly a year, as the filmmakers thought that it would be in bad taste to issue a movie with Ukrainian henchmen. When the film eventually came out in 2023, a theatrical release in the U.S. was skipped.
• Parental Guidance - the premiere of this film was cancelled after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
• Perfect Blue - Shots of full-frontal nudity cropped, as well as some graphic gore removed and a rape scene shortened in order to receive an R rating. Unrated edition released on home video.
• Police Academy 2 - In the opening scene that takes place on a beach, when a group of troublemakers started a riot there. Two women who were tanning their backs with their bras open got up startled and only then covered their breasts, this scene was cut.
• Postmark Paradise - A PG-13 version was released on home video which removed some brief strong language.
• The Raid 2 - Cut for an R rating, though the director mentioned in an interview that the changes were very subtle/a matter of a few frames.
• Rio - Originally rated PG for "mild off color humor". Re-edited to receive a G.
• Robocop - Had to be repeatedly resubmitted to the MPAA to secure an R rating over an X, finally secured by adding comedic relief that toned down the overall impact of the film.
• Salt - Violence was toned down.
• Saigon Commandos - Some violence was removed in order to get a R rating.
• Saturday Night Fever - After the mass success of the R-rated version, a PG-rated cut was released for a wider audience. This cut dubbed over/muted strong language and explicit sexual references, as well as cutting some nudity and a rape scene.
• Sausage Party - The pubic hair on a pita bread's scrotum had to be removed to avoid an NC-17 rating.
• Saving Silverman - Sexual content and strong language were removed.
• Scary Movie 3 - Sexual content was removed.
• Scary Movie 4 - Sexual content was removed.
• Scary Movie 5 - Sexual content was removed.
• School for Scoundrels - Sexual content and some language was removed.
• Scream - Scenes of gore had to be cut or shortened to achieve an R rating.
• Scream 3 - This film was delayed several months and almost completely rewritten due to the Columbine shooting. The original script revolved around a group of obsessive fans of the Stab films, the in-universe version of Scream, who put on Ghostface masks and start killing for real in imitation of their screen idols. As Columbine caused a moral panic over violence in media, with many Moral Guardians saying that the killers had their minds warped by their love of violent movies and videogames, such a story was never going to fly and Scream 3 became a dark side of entertainment story about production on Stab 3 derailed by a new killer targeting the cast and crew (the original idea later would be recycled by Kevin Williamson into the TV series The Following, with the deranged movie fans turning into deranged fans of an actual serial killer.)
• Small Soldiers:
  • The original cut which included a scene of the Commando Elite pointing their guns at Phil Fimple (who was played by Phil Hartman) and him saying "I think I'm having an aneurysm." had to be edited down after Hartman was shot and killed just over a month before the film's release.
  • The Kip Killigan toy was not distributed in Oregon due to a teen called Kip Kinkel going on a shooting spree there shortly before the release of the film.

• SpaceCamp - this film, originally scheduled to be released for early 1986, was postponed several months due to the Challenger disaster.
• Spider-Man - Some violence toned down, and blood was digitally removed due to the movie targeting a PG-13 rating.
• Steamboat Bill, Jr. - The movie was originally meant to incorporate a large flood as the disaster hitting the town. However, it was changed to a "cyclone" due to a real Mississippi flood and bickering amongst the producers.
• Sucker Punch - The movie's theatrical cut was censored in order to get a PG-13 rating, strong language was removed, the violence was toned down, and sexual content was removed. These scenes were latter added in a R rated extended edition.
• Suicide Squad - Sexual Situations were removed and the violence was toned down.
• Superman 2 - In the final scene, when Clark Kent walks into the bar where he lost a fight, to overcome the guy he fought with now that he had powers again. The guy was complaining about the food served, and ended the speech with the waitress saying "I don't like your meat anyway", as this seems to have another meaning the phrase was changed to "I don't like you anyway".
• Super Size Me - An 'educational version' was released with a PG rating specifically for schools, removing bad language and sexual references.
• Sweet Savior - Some explicit sex removed in order to receive an R rating.
• Taken - The blood effects were reduced in size, images showing drugs were removed, sexual situations were toned down and torture was also toned down in order to get a PG-13 rating, the film was released with a unrated extended edition.
• Taken 2 - Blood effects were reduced to get a PG-13 rating. The movie was latter released with a unrated DVD extended edition.
• Taken 3 - The F-word was censored and blood effects were reduced in order to get a PG-13 rating. The movie was latter released with a unrated extended edition.
• Targets - this film had its release delayed due to the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, which ended hurting it at the box office. However, the film since then has been vindicated by history.
• Teaching Mrs. Tingle - this film about high schoolers getting revenge on their teacher, originally named Killing Mrs. Tingle, was retitled to Teaching Mrs. Tingle due to Columbine.
• Team America: World Police - The puppet sex scene had to be cut and altered to receive an R rating. Uncut version is released unrated.
• The Bad Seed Returns - this TV film, sequel to The Bad Seed (2018), whose plot revolves around a young murderer who was being bullied was postponed from its original intended airdate (30 May 2022, Memorial Day) on Lifetime due to the Uvalde school shooting happening before and the film, whose subject was a young murderer, was deemed too sensitive. Its lead actress, co-writer and co-producer McKenna Grace (who, ironically, hails from Texas) personally requested that the film was pulled.

• The Young & Prodigious T.S. Spivet - Due to the movie targeting a PG rating, strong language was removed from the film.
• The Watch - This Ben Stiller movie about suburban fathers who form a neighborhood watch and end up fighting aliens, originally titled Neighborhood Watch, had its marketing withdrawn from movie theaters in the wake of the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch man in Sanford, FL. As a result, the film was renamed The Watch its marketing was revamped in order to focus more on the alien aspect than the neighborhood watch.
