Censorship

SpongeBob SquarePants is an American cartoon that was made by Nickelodeon, May 1, 1999, and it is still ongoing. The show has been censored around the world, including their origin

Censorship[]

Post-Production Censorship[]

Season One[]

  • Episode 3b
  1. The scene that shows Squidward naked was cut. (due to concerns over nudity.) however, SpongeBob was naked in both Ripped/Nature Pants, both in Season 1.

Season Two[]

  • Episode 18a
  1. All swear words were replaced with sound effects, most notably the dolphin noises that censor "bad word #11".

Season Three[]

  • Episode 3a
  1. The scene involving Squidward trying to break into the Krusty Krab, and he later ends up getting set on fire due to tripping a bucket full of gas. He later makes his way to the Patty Vault but not before another bucket of gas drops on him, reigniting the flames. However, this scene was removed from being aired worldwide (except for the Canadian and the South Korean airings, although it wasn't actually censored in recent U.S. airings for some reason). Initially, explanations for the removal were thought to be either for sensitivity reasons after the September 11 attacks, which occurred less than a month before the episode first aired in October 2001, or to prevent children from attempting to use and/or ignite gas.[1] Current showrunner Vincent Waller has confirmed in a statement on Twitter on June 4, 2018 that the removal of the scene was ultimately due to Nickelodeon being against the idea of a gag involving a match and gasoline.[2]
  • Episode 9a
  1. The scene where SpongeBob says "I dedicate this crush to my best friend Squidward!" was cut.
  • Episode 15a
  1. The scene that shows Sandy kicking SpongeBob's bottom and as a result, gets arrested was cut.
  • Episode 15b
  1. The episode was pulled from airing and digital release since sometime between 2018 and 2021 due to what the censors considered "age-inappropriate content". Many fans and reviewers pointed out the scene in question to be the panty raid at the end. Panty raiding is an old college prank where men steal women's undergarments, sometimes even actual clothing, from dorms and homes, and that has lead to fines and/or expulsions. This scene has caused concern due to fear of leading kids to think that activity is OK and imitate it, and female underwear/lingerie is considered sexual and inappropriate for children's television. Some European countries and Arabia still run the episode, but with the panty raid scene cut out.

Season Four[]

  • Episode 3
  1. Originally granny was going to be holding an axe, the axe was changed to a cookie tray due to the fact that Granny trying to eat Gary was changed to her mistaking Gary for Ms. Tuffsy.

Season Nine[]

  • Episode 17b
  1. The scene where Larry says "The only thing worse than donuts is ground glass." was cut.
  2. The scene that shows Larry forcing a glass cup into a fishes' mouth before hitting the guy's head which causes the glass cup to break in the fish's mouth was cut.

USA Censorship[]

Season Two[]

  • Episode 24a: Procrastination had a deleted scene. The most known part of it is Spongebob looking put a window. The other parts are usually thought not to be cut.

Season Three[]

  • Episode 55b: Mid-Life Crustacean was removed from reruns in 2018 and from Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video in 2021 due to the aforementioned panty raid scene.

Season Twelve[]

  • Episode 15a:The original airing of "Spongebob in Randomland" is known for a recreation of the "Red Mist Squidward" image, which shows Squidward with bloodshot eyes and bloodlike dark mascara. It originates from the Creepypasta fanfic often referred to as "Red Mist", where after Squidward's clarinet concert ends up in disastrous failure, his depression and isolation eventually causes him to graphically shoot himself to death. The redrawn image of "Red Mist Squidward" appears when Squidward opens a door in the wall of doors. However, the scene was cut in US reruns two months after its initial airing, being replaced by a brief scene of Baby Squidward in a diaper. Explanations for the removal were thought to be either the creepy nature of the image or because of the fanfic where the image originated from. According to Vincent Waller on Twitter, it was due to a Broadcast Standards and Practices issue.[3]
  • Episode 22b: Kwarantined Krab is banned from the United States due to the plot of the Clam Flu relating to COVID-19. The episode was made before the pandemic, so its relation is unintentional.
