This was not included in the 1987 VHS release of America Rock, though this was included in home media releases since 1995 and [[Disney+]]. The song was also available on the Leapster game "Schoolhouse Rock! - America Rock". The song "The Greatest Show on Earth" stopped airing in 1985 because of a lawsuit by Ringling Bros./Barnum & Bailey (who trademarked the phrase "The Greatest Show on Earth".) However, it was released on the 1987 ABC Kidavision VHS of "Science Rock" with the late Cloris Leachman, where it was erroneously listed as "Weather", but was not included in the 1995 or 1998 VHS tapes (despite the barker character also appearing in the opening), nor the Official Guide due to the suit. It was finally released as a bonus feature on the 30th anniversary DVD with the offending phrase removed and renamed as "The Weather Show". This is the version that's also available on Disney+.

  +
**In 2001, the show had ROBERT BLAKE AS BARETTA as puzzle on an episode which aired shortly after he was accused of shooting his wife. The network later had to dub in a clip of Sajak explaining the situation.
  +
**In 2004, an episode having in the category "Who Is It?" However, before the airing of the episode, Clark suffered a stroke and a clip was added in post-production, where Pat Sajak explained the circumstances and gave Clark well wishes.
  +
**Before Hurricane Katrina hit, Wheel of Fortune was taping on location in New Orleans, while the crew got two weeks done, they had to cancel a third (even if all of the contestants slated for that third week eventually did got to play). Two episodes from the first taped week had the entire puzzles edited out because it was thought that their answers might be insensitive to hurricane victims, which were replaced instead with clips of Pat and Vanna promoting Katrina relief funds.
  +
**An episode of November 2006, THE CROCODILE HUNTER puzzle was used, Said episode ended up airing right after the death of Steve Irwin. Once again, a clip of Pat Sajak was dubbed in to explain what happened.
  +
**Something similar also happened when the THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN puzzle came up after O'Brien left the show due to the ''Jay Leno Show'' debacle, ending with Leno returning to his old stomping grounds.
  +
**The December 2, 2013 episode used THE FAST AND FURIOUS as a puzzle just two days after Paul Walker's death. Although the events were not mentioned in the show, the staff made note of the unfortunate circumstances via Facebook, as Sajak did via Twitter.
  +
**A week or two of Texas-themed episodes were filmed before Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Said episodes were preceded by a short clip of Pat and Vanna explaining this.
  +
**Another episode had a contestant winning a trip to the "untouched beauty" of Puerto Rico before Hurricane Maria hit the island. A message at the bottom of the screen explained this.

This is a non-exhaustive list of television series that have been censored.

(Note: streaming sites are not shown on this page and have their own pages)

USA censorship[]

4KIDS[]

  • Doraemon - The scene where Nobi, Sneech & Big G watch Green Screen was cut off on 4KIDS TV airings. (Same as Adult Swim airings)
  • Kirby: Right Back at Ya! - Some violence, alcohol use, guns, profanity, weapons and bathroom humor were cut. But as of 2020, the show is now pronounced banned worldwide, including Japan.[1][2][3]
  • Ojamajo Doremi - Violence, death and alcohol use were cut, and only the first season (minus episode 30 because of religious references) was dubbed.
  • One Piece - Perhaps 4Kid's most notoriously censored title; it was heavily cut and modified to remove its dark elements and violence in order to get a TV-Y7-FV rating. Now that the show is owned by Funimation, they released the show uncut with a TV-14 rating.
  • Pokémon - Some episodes were banned, violence was toned down and religious references were removed.
  • Sonic X - Alcoholic references were removed, violence and sexuality were toned down due to the show targeting a TV-Y7 rating.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) - One of the episodes was banned due to graphic violence.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters - Any scenes that showed strong violence were toned down, any mention of death was removed from the show and replaced with different words to keep the show more family friendly, any scenes with wine were changed to juice, and all guns on the show were removed. The character outfits were modified to be more kid friendly. Due to these changes the show was rated TV-Y7-FV.[1]

ABC[]

  • Buzz Lightyear of Star Command - One of the episodes were banned.
  • Castle - the episode "Still", where characters had to disarm a bomb to save Beckett, was postponed in order to air two weeks after the Boston Marathon instead of one week, and never was shown in the Boston area outside of areas which received the Boston ABC affiliate's sister station in New Hampshire, online, and then, seven months later, when it hit rerun cycle. Just three days after the Boston Marathon attack, TNT aired a rerun of "47 Seconds", the other episode with a bomb plot. The latter network had then to issue an apology for it.
  • Gargoyles - The episode Deadly force was pulled from rotation.
  • Looney Tunes - Due to the networks standards some shorts were banned, and violence was toned down.
  • Mickey Mouse Works - The short, Minnie Takes Care of Pluto, was banned due to the offensive content where Pluto believes that Minnie Mouse is trying to kill him.
  • Of Kings and Prophets - Some nudity was removed.
  • The Real O'Neals - Profanity is bleeped out.
  • Schoolhouse Rock! - The song "Three Ring Government" was not aired for several years because executives at ABC were concerned that the FCC and Congress would resent being compared to a circus and threaten their broadcast license renewal. This was not included in the 1987 VHS release of America Rock, though this was included in home media releases since 1995 and Disney+.

Adult Swim[]

Adult Swim usually shortens anime openings/endings and removes every eyecatch in order to allow more commercials than the original airing. Opening and ending themes in particular are cut out completely. Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Bleach were exempt of the latter censorship (FLCL was exempt as it does not have opening credits). However, with the revival of Toonami, the network relaxed a little on cutting the openings and endings, in particular for their more popular shows, but it still persists. The current practice for most shows airing on Toonami is to show the full opening during the premiere episode and then an edited one for the remaining ones.

  • Wheel of Fortune - some examples are due to certain events happening between the tape date and air date:
    • In an 1992 episode which had VANNA'S PREGNANT as a puzzle (in reference to the show's longtime assistant Vanna White), who had a miscarriage after the taping, so the only choice NBC had was to edit the entire round to replace it with host Pat Sajak narrating a behind-the-scenes featurette on San Diego, where the show was being taped at the time.
    • In 2001, the show had ROBERT BLAKE AS BARETTA as puzzle on an episode which aired shortly after he was accused of shooting his wife. The network later had to dub in a clip of Sajak explaining the situation.
    • In 2004, an episode having in the category "Who Is It?" (the puzzle was a clue to a famous person with the contestant getting a bonus for identifying the person) where the answer AGELESS HOST OF ANNUAL NEW YEAR'S ROCKIN' EVE SPECIAL describing Dick Clark. However, before the airing of the episode, Clark suffered a stroke and a clip was added in post-production, where Pat Sajak explained the circumstances and gave Clark well wishes.
    • Before Hurricane Katrina hit, Wheel of Fortune was taping on location in New Orleans, while the crew got two weeks done, they had to cancel a third (even if all of the contestants slated for that third week eventually did got to play). Two episodes from the first taped week had the entire puzzles edited out because it was thought that their answers might be insensitive to hurricane victims, which were replaced instead with clips of Pat and Vanna promoting Katrina relief funds.
    • An episode of November 2006, THE CROCODILE HUNTER puzzle was used, Said episode ended up airing right after the death of Steve Irwin. Once again, a clip of Pat Sajak was dubbed in to explain what happened.
    • Something similar also happened when the THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN puzzle came up after O'Brien left the show due to the Jay Leno Show debacle, ending with Leno returning to his old stomping grounds.
    • The December 2, 2013 episode used THE FAST AND FURIOUS as a puzzle just two days after Paul Walker's death. Although the events were not mentioned in the show, the staff made note of the unfortunate circumstances via Facebook, as Sajak did via Twitter.
    • A week or two of Texas-themed episodes were filmed before Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Said episodes were preceded by a short clip of Pat and Vanna explaining this.
    • Another episode had a contestant winning a trip to the "untouched beauty" of Puerto Rico before Hurricane Maria hit the island. A message at the bottom of the screen explained this.
