For the reboot of this series, see The Powerpuff Girls (2016).

The Powerpuff Girls is an American cartoon that was made by Cartoon Network. The show was released on November 18, 1998, and it ended on March 25, 2005. One of the episodes was banned in the USA.

Censorship[]

Name change[]

When Craig McCracken first created the three girl characters that would become The Powerpuff Girls, they were originally named "The Whoopass Girls", and the short film he made in college was titled "Whoopass Stew!" When the short was submitted to Cartoon Network, he had to change the name because of the swear word "ass", hence the name "The Powerpuff Girls". The "Can of Whoopass" used to create the girls was changed to "Chemical X". The short can be found on the Complete Series DVD and on YouTube.

Post-Production Censorship[]

Season Five[]

  • Episode 6(See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey)
  1. The episode was banned from running due to one of the beams looking like a cross and due to one of the hippies looking like Jesus. It has only aired on YTV Canada on March 18, 2004.
  • Episode 11(Curses)
  1. All uses of the "bad word" were replaced with sound effects that comedically fit the scenes.

International Censorship[]

HBO Max[]

Season Five[]

  • Episode 6(See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey)
  1. The episode was banned just like in Cartoon Network USA.

Southeast Asia[]

FamTV[]

  • In the episode "The Bare Facts", the final scene with the Mayor standing naked was blurred.

Boomerang[]

  • In the title sequence, Buttercup kicking Him in the face, knocking off a tooth and blood, was replaced with an earlier shot of the girls flying into the villain battleground.
  • In the episode "The Bare Facts", the final scene with the Mayor standing naked was zoomed in to not show his butt.
  • While the episode "Curses" aired in Cartoon Network Asia long before censorship was applied to that channel, it was banned from airing on Boomerang Asia (along with several other episodes for other reasons) due to the idea of children swearing.

Where to find it uncensored[]

You can find the banned episode on DVDs and it can be found online on other streaming sites such as Google Play.
