The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom TV series that was created by Matt Groening and produced by FOX. The show first premiered on December 17, 1989. Since then, over 700 episodes have aired, many of which have been censored around the world.

When the show was released in the United Kingdom, some scenes were either cut or censored due to network standards. Sky One, Channel 4 BBC Two and Disney+ censored the show for the UK broadcast. One episode was removed from Disney+. The Halloween-themed Treehouse of Horror episodes were most subject to censorship.

This episode, where Homer buys a handgun to protect his family after Springfield is plagued by a football riot (which disappeared from the plot as quickly as it came), was scheduled to air in the UK, but it was banned due to the Dunblane School Massacre (which happened a year before the episode happened), as well to the fact that the BBFC despises scenes of characters (be they heroes or idiots) using irresponsibly weapons in such a way that impressionable viewers will see fun as imitate. However, said episode appears on the "Simpsons: Too Hot for TV" VHS and the Season 9 DVD set[1].[2]
    2. When the episode aired on Sky, the end scene of Marge trying to throw out the gun, but stopping when she realized it makes her look cool was cut, making it seem that Marge got rid of the gun offscreen, leaving unexplained why she was walking like a femme fatale when she exited the motel.

The reason of the edit was because around the time of its UK broadcast, the UK was plagued by "The Sex Murders", in which a man or woman cheated on his or her spouse with someone else who was married and wanted to have an extramarital affair would kil his or her lover and send the hand of the victim to the spouse of the murder victim, was already in the news and on everyone's minds.

The change was made due to the fact that a month after the episode's first airing, Dr. Ngor was murdered, which meant that viewers who saw the episode later would probably think that Homer killed him for it. On the other hand, Don Ameche died a few years earlier, but of natural causes.

  • Episode 13 ("The Joy of Sect")
    1. This episode, written in 1997, at the same time of the mass suicide commited by the members of the Heaven's Gate cult, was altered due to the writers being aware of strange parallels between the first draft and Heaven's gate, such as the belief in the arrival of a spaceship and the group wearing matching clothes and odd sneakers. Due to this coincidences, several elements of this episode were changed in order that it could be more sensitive in the wake of the suicides.
Season 10[]
  • Episode 10 ("Viva Ned Flanders")
    1. While this episode originally re-ran at the same day as the Columbine shootings, the real reason this episode was withdrawn was because of the line where Homer says that Barney's birthday is the same as Adolf Hitler's, which was April 20th. On future reruns, as well those overseas, replaced it with him saying that he shares his birthday with Lassie the Dog on July 15th.

  • Episode 20 ("Stop Or My Dog Will Shoot")
    1. This episode was scheduled to air on 26 April 2007. However, due to the Virginia Tech Massacre ocurring 10 days before, the episode was pulled due to scenes of gun abuse and a school emergency calling for evacuation (though the latter on the show was because of Bart's pet snake running loose). It was only 13th May when the episode aired.
  • Episode 22 ("You Kent Always Say What You Want")
    1. This episode was originally titled "The Kent State Massacre", but it was changed due to the Virginia Tech Massacre perpetrated by Cho Seung-hui ocurring one month before its schedule airdate.

The producers explained that they no longer believed that Jackson's intentions in participating in the episode were "benign" as they see it. However the episode is still available legally, as the censorship only applies to the 2019 reprint.
